NICKNAMES: Potter? Maybe. Harry's really not one for nicknames. AGE | DOB: 17 | 31 July 1980 HOGWARTS HOUSE | YEAR: Gryffindor | 7th year BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood. His mother is a muggleborn and his father is from a long line of purebloods. RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single SEXUALITY: Heterosexual OCCUPATION: Student. LOCATION: Godric's Hollow when not at Hogwarts. FAMILY BACKGROUND: Father: James Potter Mother: Lily Potter née Evans Siblings: –– Other Family: Sirius Black (godfather), Petunia Dursley (maternal aunt, muggle), Dudley Dursley (maternal cousin, muggle) Lily and James met one another the first day of their first year. Both Gryffindors, their relationship could hardly be considered love at first sight. They didn't even become friendly until their seventh year when they were appointed to their respective head positions. Married shortly after they finished school, with the majority of the Order in attendance, Harry came shortly after. He spent the first couple years of his life in hiding at their home in Godric's Hollow. By 1982, however, the War was over and the small family could come out of hiding. An only child, Harry had a rather idyllic childhood, if slightly spoiled one. | physical appearance Just shoot for the stars If it feels right _______________________________ Like his parents, Harry is not a particlarly tall person, though over the last year he's finally hit his growth spurt and can now look his father in the eye. (His mother thinks he has another inch or so in him, but Harry mostly shrugs that off). Most people comment that he looks exactly like his father, except for the green eyes, but that's because they don't bother to look closer. True, his black hair is the same shade as his father and is just as unruly (if not more so) than James', but it also has a slight wave to it like Lily's. His nose slightly crooked thanks to a bludger to the face in his second year. Though he's grown taller, Harry's still a skinny lanky thing, well suited in his position as seeker for the Quidditch team, which he has held since second year. Harry has a somewhat cocky and arrogant air about him, if only because he's seventeen years old and the world is at his feet. There is a reason why they say youth is wasted on the young. He walks with an easy gate, shoulders up and straight, but he has a tendency to slouch when seated. Harry's smile is an easy one of someone who grew up with little to worry about, which he shares frequently. If he's not in his uniform, Harry dresses in muggle clothing. Unlike his father, he sticks with jeans and usually some solid shirt or one with subtle/simple patterning. He doesn't really do the shopping thing and has a tendency to grab the first thing he sees in the store. At least his mother has broken him of the habit of not bothering to double check the size. Starting this year, regardless of what he's wearing, Harry has at least attempted to make his clothes look presentable. No wrinkled clothes for him. Now only if his hair would behave itself... |
personality And you want to steer But I'm shifting gears _______________________________ In many ways, Harry is a normal seventeen year old boy who has just recently reached his majority. He can be cocky, arrogant, and sure of his own invincibility, but what boy his age isn't? Harry grew up the only child to wealthy parents, understanding that he could do anything he wanted with his life. He can be incredibly confident in his abilities, though he has a hard time seeing his own weaknesses. All in all, he’s a perfectly normal seventeen year old boy. Just because he was sorted into Gryffindor, that doesn’t mean Harry cannot be ambitious, manipulative, and goal-oriented. He was almost sorted into Slytherin, after all. From an early age he often treated his father as more of a friend rather than a parent, learning that if he really wanted something, he should go to his father first to help soften up his mother. When Harry puts effort into anything, he usually succeeds. If it’s Qudditch, academics, or being subversive underneath a hated professor. Harry’s just stubborn like that. Of course, that means when he doesn’t put much effort into something, it’s quite likely he’s going to fail, or at least not do very well, much to the chagrin of his professors. Harry is not motivated by seeing the good grade or earning a job well done from one of his parents. Extrinsic motivations mean little to him as it is the intrinsic that motivates him. Harry understands the world as either being right or being wrong, grey hasn’t really entered his world view yet. He will stand up for what he believes in, even if it is to his detriment. Harry has the scars on the back of his hand to prove it. Harry grew up knowing that he would never want for material items in his life. Toys, books, clothing, even brooms, his wants and needs were usually met. Money doesn’t necessarily burn a hole in his pocket, screaming to be spent, but if the impulse to buy is strong enough, Harry usually will (and usually on sweets from Honeyduke’s). Because of growing up in this manner, he never really took into account if a friend could not afford something, sometimes unintentionally shoving his wealth in their face, but he always offered to cover what they didn’t have! Harry’s heart is in the right place. As a general rule, Harry is genial towards other people. Gregarious, even as a child, Harry makes friends easily, though he can count the number of truly close friends on two hands. Just as he’s comfortable in a large gathering of people, he also enjoys spending time with just Ron and Hermione. Harry doesn’t tend to be callous in how he treats others, though he has trouble getting over poor first impressions and grudges. Eventually he can admit his own mistakes and apologize (if need be). Likes: Quidditch, chocolate frogs, owls, treacle tart, the smell of broom polish, lazy Saturdays where he can sleep until 1, bacon. Dislikes: turnips/parsnips/any vege ending in “nips”, Potions/Professor Snape, having to wake up early, not being able to fly. Astrology: Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac and rules the back, the spine, and the heart. Positive traits include creativity, charisma, generosity, warmth, enthusiasm, a natural talent for leadership, and a great deal of inner power; negative traits are haughtiness, snobbery, an expectation that one is the centre of attention and should be waited on by everyone else, profligacy, lack of realism, dominance that can lead to bullying, and a refusal to change one's mind even in the face of solid facts. This is a natural sign for Gryffindors, not least because the griffin is part lion. Gryffindors born under this sign are outgoing, friendly, affectionate, and likeable. They make friends easily and are crushed when their advances are rejected. Their romantic, chivalrous nature makes them perfect examples of all that is best in their House. However, they are also bossy, domineering, spendthrift, and overly dramatic (ever heard the phrase "drama queen?") They have sharp tempers and need to learn to direct their anger toward only needful causes. The natural creativity and flamboyance of Leo makes Gryffindors born under this sign good at most everything they attempt, provided they apply themselves to learning magic rather than using magic to hog the limelight. | ‹‹ Harry tends to fidget when sitting for too long. You will see him in class tapping his quill or playing noughts-and-crosses in the margins of his notes. Outside of class you will see him playing with a snitch: tossing it up and catching it before it gets out of reach. ‹‹ Harry loves to sleep, positively adores it, in fact. But at the same time, he can go to bed late and wake up early, full of energy. During school, he could regularly function on four hours of sleep during the week. He’ll then catch up on the weekends. He doesn’t do it as often as he did in previous years, but it’s been known to happen. ‹‹ Ostensibly Harry roots for the Kenmare Kestrels, as his father is a partial owner of the team. However he has friends who play for Puddlemere and the Holyhead Harpies and Harry will always root for friends. If none of those teams are playing, he also likes the Montrose Magpies. ‹‹ Harry’s wand is 11”, made of holly wood, and the core is a tail feather from Fawkes, Dumbledore’s pheonix. It is nice and supple. The wand had been in Ollivander’s shop for nearly two generations before Harry came in with his parents. As his parents were paying for the wand (and Harry was preoccupied by the wand) Ollivander revealed that it was the brother to Voldemort’s, as Fawkes donated two tail feathers over sixty years before. ‹‹ Harry wasn’t terribly bothered when he didn’t follow his father’s footsteps as Head Boy. Personally, he doesn’t want the extra work. However, he is quite proud of his appointment as Captain for the Gryffindor Quidditch team during his sixth year. He doesn’t think of himself as demanding as Oliver, but he’s not afraid to put in the work to win. ‹‹ His father gave him his Invisibility Cloak over the Christmas holidays during Harry’s first year. His mother was in the next room and James’ words were “Don’t get caught.” So far, Harry’s been pretty good at not getting caught, though it’s only big enough for one person (maybe two) now. ‹‹ Harry's first serious girlfriend was Ginny Weasley. Their first kiss after he was released from the Hospital Wing and she had caught the snitch for the Quidditch up for the second year in a row. The relationship was an easy, fun, and apparently short lived. Harry’s not sure if he has any lingering feelings for Ginny, but nobody recently has sparked his interest. ‹‹ When he was younger and upset with his parents he would “run away,” usually over next door to his godfather’s house, somehow convinced that Sirius would be able to tell his father what to do. (Harry now knows better, it’s in fact his mother telling his father what to do, but he was a child, what did he know?) Harry always returned home after having his pout. ‹‹ Harry doesn’t see himself as a troublemaker. Of course, some of his professors may disagree with that sentiment, but whatever trouble Harry has gotten himself into was because he felt like he was either standing up for himself or his friends. Luckily for the past two years he hasn’t had much reason to cause much mischief (beyond the normal amount). ‹‹ Harry’s patronous is a stag, like his father’s animagus form. He began to practice the spell during his fifth year shortly after he figured out what a horrible teacher Umbridge was going to be. He owled Remus for some extra books (because he had to know which ones were best) and began to practice. He also offered help anyone in the Defense Association who wanted it. Harry was able to successfully master the spell in time for his OWLs, which he gleefully showed off. ‹‹ His OWL Scores: Astronomy: E |
biography And if I share my secret You're gonna have to keep it _______________________________ Harry James Potter was born in the height of the War on July 31st, 1980 to James and Lily Potter. Active members of the Order of the Phoenix, the Potters doted on their son, choosing to remain at home rather than put themselves in danger. Harry spent the first eighteen months of his life with his world limited to their home in Godric's Hollow. This was not easy for an inquisitive child who took his first (unsteady) steps at nine months. By the time he was a toddler he could frequently be found in places his parents could have sworn they baby proofed. The family came out of hiding after New Years 1982 and Harry was unleashed upon the world (sometimes literally). While his mother split her time between St. Mungo's and their home, his father was the one who primarily stayed home. As a result, Harry is particularly close to his father, having spent many afternoons of his childhood learning how to fly and getting into mischief. Almost from the first moment he was on broom, Harry knew he was meant to be in the air. He couldn't get enough of it. From the rush of take off to feeling the win mussing with his already messy hair, Harry was never as happy as he was when he was flying. An only child, Harry always hoped to have a younger sibling that he could blame things on, but that never came into fruition. He was never at a loss for childhood playmates, however, growing up besides Amelia Lupin and Alfie Black. He considers the pair to be the next best thing to siblings and treats them as such, meaning he isn't always nice to them, but he can still be quite protective. As expected, Harry's Hogwarts' letter came shortly before his eleventh birthday. He'd had the odd occasional burst of accidental magic through the years, the most memorable being when he changed his primary school teacher's hair blue. Like many of his peers, Harry was excited for Hogwarts and as a consequence bought way too many sweets from the woman with the trolly, though he offered to share them with Ron Weasley, the boy he was sitting with on the train. By the time of his sorting, he was already feeling queasy, not looking forward to possibly wrestling a troll (as mentioned by one of his soon to be classmates). Thankfully for his stomach, the Sorting merely consisted of being judged by an old accessory. By the time his name was called, both Harry's stomach and nerves had calmed considerably. When later asked about his sorting, and the length of time it took, Harry would merely shrug. The Sorting Hat had suggested Slytherin, for Harry had a thirst to prove himself and the ambition to do so, but Harry said no. He'd seen the look of the Head of House of Slytherin and Harry knew he wouldn't like Severus Snape. Besides, he wanted to follow in his father's and godfather's (and mother's) footsteps into Gryffindor. Ron was sorted to the same house shortly thereafter. He got along well with the other boys in his dorm. He knew Neville already, and Seamus and Dean were alright blokes, but he got along with Ron best. They bonded over their initial shared poor impression of Hermione Granger on the Hogwarts' Express. She had taken to following them around, a fact neither boy could quite comprehend. It was over that Halloween that their friendship really became cemented. After overhearing an offhand comment, Hermione had fled to the girl's loo, missing the announcement that there was troll on the loose and everyone needed to return to their respective common rooms. It was Harry who dragged Ron to the loo, trying to find their housemate before the troll came across them. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't his intention to come face to face with the troll, let alone fight it. So when Hermione took the blame, a friendship was born and a duo became a trio. Harry joined the Gryffindor Quidditch team in his second year, delayed only because there was that pesky rule about first years not being allowed their own brooms. (The school brooms were rubbish and he wasn't going to waste his time on that.) Despite being the youngest player on the team, he was dedicated to the sport (almost above his school work) and got along well with his older teammates. The almost perfect year was marred by the appearance of the "Heir of Slytherin" and petrification of muggleborns, Hermione included. Somehow he and Ron were able to figure out the puzzle and rescue Ginny Weasley from sure death. In stark contrast to his second year, his third and fourth were remarkably normal and almost downright boring. Harry elected to take Muggle Studies and Divination in addition to the core courses, mostly because he thought they would be easy. Both of them were easily mistakes. Not only was Muggle Studies dead boring (his mother could have taught the class much better, not that he would ever say as much, Harry does not want his mother getting any ideas about teaching at Hogwarts), but the Divination professor had the odd habit of predicting everybody's death. The class wasn't exactly cheery and uplifting. Also, the amount of incense in the air made Harry sneeze. His fourth year brought the Triwizard Tournament and his wicked crush on Cho Chang. Disappointed that there wasn’t going to any quidditch that year, Harry threw himself into the excitement of the Tournament, cheering for Hogwarts (of course), but Viktor Krum was a close second. He took Parvati Patil to the Yule Ball, but freely admits that he was a horrible date, considering how he was mooning after Cho. She never game him a second look. Harry’s fifth year would have been great, after all Quidditch was back, except Professor Umbridge had come to the Castle. He hated her with a fiery passion. She had taken his favorite class, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and turned it into a mockery of itself. He was quite vocal in class, leading to a fair number of detentions and a faint scar on the back of his hand reading I will not be insolent. Apparently the the message didn’t sink in as he started a school wide rebellion against her. Even when Umbridge gave him enough detentions to effectively sidelining him from Quidditch and banning him from Hogsmeade for the entire year, Harry did not breathe a word to his parents, under the assumption that he could handle it. Apparently he and the student movement had enough of an impact that Umbridge was not asked back to teach for a second year. Upon receiving his OWL scores, Harry quickly dropped Muggle Studies, Divination, History of Magic, and Potions. He had no idea what he wanted to do after finishing Hogwarts. The idea of becoming an auror had been suggested during his career counseling session, but without taking NEWT level Potions that was not going to happen. Being a hitwizard would be an acceptable substitution, but Harry wasn’t going to give it that much thought. Instead, he concentrated academics, friends, and quidditch (though not necessarily in that order). It was a crushing blow when he was stuck in the hospital wing after lesson gone wrong, missing the Quidditch cup for the second year in a row. Luckily Ginny did a brilliant job catching the snitch. Now in his seventh and final year, Harry’s determined to not miss his final Quidditch Cup match, but much beyond that he is unburdened. Maybe he’ll go play professional quidditch (though gaining a spot on the Kestrels stinks of nepotism) or he’ll find something else to attract his attention. | |
writing sample Please choose one of the following scenarios and write a 100-250 word first person POV journal entry in the voice of the character you're applying for. ‹‹ During class. [Warded to 5th year Gryffindor Boys, Hermione, other members of the Defense Association] Charms is beginning to resemble History of Magic right now. Not that I don’t like Flitwick, but he’s doing a damn good impression of Binns right now. He’s nearly put me to sleep twice, so writing in this thing is better than falling asleep. I’m bored.
